Camera dei Deputati
Joint Declaration by the President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French
National Assembly, Jean-Louis BOURLANGES, by the President of the Foreign
Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Piero FASSINO, by the
President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, Norbert
RÖTTGEN, and by the President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Spanish
Chamber of Deputies, Pau Marì KLOSE
We are following with attention and concern the evolution of recent events in Tunisia,
a nation to which our states are linked by deep bonds of friendship and cooperation.
The fate of Tunisia belongs only to the Tunisians and their democratically elected
representatives. We believe that the current situation must be treated in full respect of the
Constitution and in respect of the political, civil and human rights that the laws recognize to
the citizens of Tunisia.
It seems essential to us that Tunisian society is protected from any process of
radicalization and traumatic division and that, on the other hand, a constructive and
respectful national dialogue is put in place between all the political, social and cultural
components of the country.
At the same time, we urge our Governments and the European Union to take the
necessary initiatives to accompany Tunisia in this delicate passage. In particular, it is
necessary to ensure access to vaccines and health facilities essential for the protection of
citizens against the dangers of Covid19; to mobilize the financial resources necessary for
economic recovery; and, finally, to contribute to the indispensable political dialogue in the
emergence of a stable and shared solution to the current crisis.
As Chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs Committees of our respective Parliaments, we
are ready to take any initiative of parliamentary dialogue that can facilitate a quick and
consensual exit from the crisis.
