Paris, 17 January 2022
Dear Chairpersons,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,
On 24 and 25 February 2022, in the framework of the French Presidency of
the Council of the European Union, we will be honoured to welcome you to the
Palais du Luxembourg – the home of the Senate of the French Republic – for the
meeting of the Interparliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and
Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP),
which will be held as an actual physical meeting for the first time since the Zagreb
conference of 3 and 4 March 2020.
This conference will provide an opportunity to discuss the Union's external
policy priorities at a time when we are required, by a deteriorating strategic
context, to build our capacity to achieve the defence and foreign policy objectives
we have collectively set. While the exercise of defining a common "Strategic
Compass" should lead to the adoption of a final document next spring, it is
essential for members of parliament from each Member State to have an
opportunity to debate these issues and express their points of view on decisions
that will commit our countries for years to come.
We look forward to welcoming you to Paris for discussions that will enable
all delegations to enrich the activities undertaken under the French Presidency.
Yours faithfully,
Christian CAMBON
Chairman of the Senate
Foreign Affairs, Defence and
Armed Forces Committee
Jean-Louis BOURLANGES
Chairman of the National
Assembly Foreign Affairs
Committee
Françoise DUMAS
Chairwoman of the National
Assembly Defence and
