The Danish Government’s response to the public consultation on
short
term rentals initiative
Denmark welcomes the EU-Commission’s initiative on examining the need of an ap-
proach at EU level towards short term rentals (STR’s) for recreational purposes. The
Danish Government agrees with the Commission that e.g. the examination of the need
across EU to secure access to systematic and consistent data is important and rele-
vant. Such data enables the authorities to identify the landlord and for how long and
how often the STR’s
take place.
The said data is necessary for the public authorities to ensure an effective enforcement
of the national rules pertaining to the subject matter. Securing compliance with na-
tional rules on STR’s is essential in order to secure a balanced and sustainable housing
market and tourism sector.
It is furthermore important that possible EU rules only pertains to the short term rent-
als and fully respects the principle of subsidiarity, for example in relation to urban
planning.
Denmark would like to point to the fact that professional rental of private housing
(primary as well as secondary) by the private owner/tenant for recreational purposes
requires a permit, which very rarely is issued.
