The Chairman
To the Chairperson(s) of the committee(s) concerned
Honourable Chairperson,
In accordance with Article 85(1) TFEU and Article 67 (3) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1727 on
the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust) , the President of
Eurojust shall appear once a year for the joint evaluation of the activities of Eurojust by the
European Parliament and National Parliaments within the framework of an
interparliamentary committee meeting, to discuss the agency’s current activities and to
present its annual report or its other key documents.
Such exercise constitutes a pivotal element of regular parliamentary scrutiny of Eurojust,
which is mandated by the primary law and the Regulation in force. The first two of such
meetings were organized by the European Parliament in December 2020 and in January
2022 (for the 2021 exercise). Further to the extraordinary circumstances linked to the war in
Ukraine, the Eurojust Regulation was swiftly amended with new provisions. This extended
mandate entered into force on 1
st
June 2022 and gave the agency the legal possibility to
collect, preserve and share evidence on war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide,
which provides further compelling reason to hold an exchange between Eurojust and the
European and National Parliaments to discuss these developments.
Against this background, the LIBE Committee, in cooperation with Czech Chamber of
Deputies and Czech Senate, would like to invite Members of National Parliaments to the 3
rd
interparliamentary committee meeting on “The
evaluation of Eurojust activities”.
The
meeting is scheduled on Wednesday,
30 November 2022, from 15.30 to 18.30,
at the
European Parliament premises in Brussels.
The topics to be addressed include a discussion on Eurojust annual report and outlook on its
activities and challenges for future cross-border judicial cooperation in criminal matters, as
well as the strengthening of the Eurojust mandate enacted this year including the activities it
carries out with regard to the war in Ukraine in supporting the collection and sharing of
evidence relating to core international crimes.
I am therefore pleased to invite up to four Members of the relevant committee(s) from each
national Parliament (two from each Chamber in the case of bi-cameral Parliaments) to
attend this meeting. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the two previous meetings had to be
organized in a remote setting. This year presents an important opportunity to hold such
meeting in person and allow the relevant Members engaged in the scrutiny of EU
cooperation in criminal justice to meet and exchange their views.
Should you be unable to attend, I would welcome any written contribution, which would be
distributed to our respective Members and other participants.
Practical details regarding the meeting will be forwarded in due course to your Parliament's
services for relations with the European Parliament.
