RESOLUTION
OF THE SENATE OF THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND
of 18 December 2024
on the situation in Georgia
The Senate of the Republic of Poland strongly supports the European ambitions of the
Georgian people who wish to live in a sovereign and democratic state that is free from corruption;
a state that respects human rights, independent media as well as free and fair elections; a state that
guarantees the development of the civil society.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland deplores the fact that with the adoption of anti-
democratic laws by the governing regime in Georgia, the process of integration between Georgia
and the European Union has been
de facto
suspended.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland holds the view expressed in the Constitution of
Georgia that the future of Georgia is strictly related to European and Euro-Atlantic integration, and
believes that the policy of the ruling Georgian Dream party goes against European values.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland believes that violations of electoral integrity
contravene the standards required from a European Union candidate state, and the way in which
the most recent elections were run in Georgia is yet another manifestation of a deepening crisis of
democracy, for which the ruling party bears full responsibility. That is why the Senate of the
Republic of Poland is in favour of the call to carry out an independent and transparent international
investigation into alleged electoral fraud and voter intimidation that took place during the electoral
campaign and on election day.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland expresses its solidarity with thousands of protesting
Georgians. As senators, we strongly condemn violence against peaceful protesters in Tbilisi and
other Georgian towns and cities, as well as the intimidation and unlawful detention of protesters
and journalists. The brutal suppression of civil protests is yet another proof that Georgia, a country
that is so close to our hearts here in Poland, is following the Russian way.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland calls on the Georgian government to cease forthwith
its brutal repressions against its own people, and also calls on the national parliaments of
democratic states to decisively condemn the violence used by the Georgian government against
peacefully protesting citizens.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland calls on the governing regime in Georgia to rerun the
parliamentary elections, as it is only through fair elections that a new Georgian government with a
democratic mandate may put Georgia back on track towards Europe.
This Resolution shall be published in the Official Journal of the Republic of Poland, “Monitor
Polski.”
