Committee on Foreign Affairs
The Chair
[ EXPO-COM-AFET D (2025) 714]
D 300219 16.01.2025
Dear Chair, dear Colleague,
I would like to cordially invite you, together with a small delegation from your committee,
to an inter-parliamentary committee meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee on
19
February 2025 from 9:00 to 12:30 (CET)
in the European Parliament, in Brussels.
The inter-parliamentary committee meeting will be structured into two sessions.
The first session will be entitled “Transatlantic
relations in challenging times”.
The
transatlantic partnership remains one of the most important and strategic relationships for
the EU and its Member States and it is more important than ever to maintain its resilience
in the face of geopolitical challenges such as Russia, China, and Ukraine, and the ongoing
struggle between democracy and autocracy. With the new Trump Administration, the EU
needs to devise a strategy how to maintain a strong and mutually beneficial transatlantic
agenda, while ensuring that its legitimate interests are defended. This exchange of views
aims at discussing the way forward in EU-US relations and opportunities for foreign policy
cooperation in the course of the incoming Trump administration.
In the second session, we will focus on “Towards
a multipolar world - what role for the
European Union?”.
In an era defined by geopolitical realignments and the rise of a
multipolar world, the European Union faces both challenges and opportunities in redefining
its global role. As new powers emerge and existing alliances shift, what position should the
EU take in shaping the international order? Can it balance its commitment to multilateralism
and democratic values with the pressures of Realpolitik? And how can it assert itself as a
global leader while navigating internal divisions and external competition? This session will
explore the EU’s potential as a bridge-builder, a standard-setter, and a force for stability in
an increasingly complex international landscape.
The event will be followed by a
working lunch from 12:30 to 14:00 for the heads of
delegation.
