Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs
The Chairman
To the Chairperson(s) of the committee(s) concerned
Honourable Chairperson,
I have the pleasure of inviting you to the
5th Inter-parliamentary meeting on the control of
activities of Eurojust
which will take place on
2nd December 2024 from 15.00-18.00 in the
European Parliament (in Brussels).
In accordance with Article 85(1) TFEU and Article 67(3) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1727 on the
European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust), the President of Eurojust
shall appear once a year for the joint evaluation of the activities of Eurojust by the European
Parliament and National Parliaments within the framework of an Interparliamentary Committee
Meeting, to discuss the agency’s current activities and to present its annual report or its other
key documents.
This will be the first such interparliamentary exercise under the EP’s 10th parliamentary term
and the fifth since the entry into force of the Eurojust Regulation. The college of Eurojust is to
elect this year its new President, who is to take up his functions by 15th November.
As a consequence of the war in Ukraine, the Eurojust Regulation has been amended with new
provisions providing it with capacity to store and analyse and share evidence on core
international crimes, outcome of which is the establishment of the Core International Crimes
Evidence Database (CICED). In addition to setting up a Joint Investigation Team with Ukraine,
six EU Member States and International Criminal Court, International Centre for the
Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression Against Ukraine (ICPA) has been established within
Eurojust. Drug trafficking is one of the most serious security threats facing Europe today. The
situation is escalating, with an unprecedented increase in illicit drugs available in Europe. The
drug trade continues to be one of the main profit-generating activities of organised crime. It
has therefore been one of the top crimes dealt with by the Eurojust agency in the last year.
Against this background, the LIBE Committee, in cooperation with the Hungarian Parliament,
would like to invite Members of National Parliaments to the 5th Interparliamentary Committee
Meeting on “The
evaluation of Eurojust activities”.
The meeting is scheduled for Monday,
2nd December 2024, from 15.00 to 18.00
at the European Parliament premises in Brussels
(in-person meeting).
The topics to be addressed include a discussion on Eurojust’s annual report and outlook on
its activities and challenges for future cross-border judicial cooperation in criminal matters. We
will also assess Eurojust’s contribution to the fight against the organized crime, in particular in
relation to drug-trafficking cases. Finally, assessment of the increasing number of Eurojust’s
activities with regard to war in Ukraine, will be also part of our exchange.
I am therefore pleased to invite up to four Members of the relevant Committee(s) from each
national Parliament (two from each Chamber in the case of bi-cameral Parliaments) to attend
this meeting.
